The first question about chain cleaning is naturally when the chain needs to be cleaned. My personal opinion is that every few months or every time the chain comes into contact with seawater/snow, or there is obvious oil stains on the chain, it needs to be cleaned in a timely manner. The chain is stained with seawater, and if not cleaned with gasoline in a timely manner, it will still break after two to three days. This is because the salt content in seawater and snow melting agents can significantly increase the electrochemical corrosion of the chain, so timely cleaning is necessary.

The next question is naturally what to use for cleaning, and the best cleaning method is certainly chain cleaner. But I have also heard of various alternative plans such as water/soapy water/gasoline/brake disc cleaner/WD-40. First and foremost, WD-40 is harmless to chains.

Although clean water and soapy water may not pose significant harm in the short term, we all expect the chain to operate in a dry environment. The water film on the chain will inevitably accelerate the rate of corrosion, and gasoline will not cause harm to the chain in the short term. However, in the long term, it will affect the function of the rubber sealing ring.

As for the brake disc cleaner, although it is very easy to obtain in the prosperous area of sedan/locomotive civilization in the United States, it has a significant impact on the chain function and is extremely not recommended for use.

For daily chain cleaning, spraying chain cleaner or WD-40 while rotating the chain is sufficient. If necessary, a cloth, toothbrush, or specialized chain cleaning brush can be used for cleaning. Subsequently, spray the chain smoothing agent separately on the bearings on both sides of the table, as the main components of the chain smoothing agent are the bearings and rubber sealing rings. Finally, use a clean towel to wipe off any remaining smoothing agent.
